Gothic atmosphere so thick you can cut it with a glass scimitar.

For all of her young life, Lady Mara has been plagued with nightmares brought on by strange, frightening noises echoing up through the stairways and vaults of the labyrinthine Castle Szeppasszony in the depths of night. When, at age 16, she finally discovers their origin, the bloodcurdling secrets of the castle's beautiful lady, Countess Orzsebet, are dragged out into the light of day. Revealing these horrors brings down curses, chaos and war, opening the way for the long-exiled Dragon People, the evil Royal Zsarkany, to return.

How does Lady Mara survive when all she loves is torn from her, and a dark and terrible future is all she sees?

Clairvoyance, occult powers, narcissism, sacrifice, politics and religion engage in the ageless struggle between good and evil. Can love survive the fire of wickedness in high places, to must it too be consumed in the flames?

Enter the remote castle nestled in a green crater on the Mountain of the Moon in war-torn 17th century Royal Hungary. Threatened by Ottoman armies without and sorcery within, Mara refuses to be seduced by evil’s dark splendor.

Mara moves through lush, mysterious, highly imaginative settings, spinning the tale of her strange, dark life among the magnificent chambers, labyrinthine corridors, and secret gardens of Castle Seppasszony. Unpredictable twists and turns lead Marya and the reader unawares toward the horrific core of the mystery.

This book was largely inspired by elements of the Goth scene in London, and my interest in the 16th-17th centuries in Europe. I have written many stories based on fairy tales for adults that have been published in many fine e-zines and in print

An enormous amount of research on crux of the 16th-17th centuries in Hungary, religious and political conflicts, the magical arts, even the timing of the phases of the moon, went into this book. It took 5 years to write.

I feel there is a great deal in this story to entertain readers and give them food for thought on issues of power, good and evil, and the forces that clash within us. The setting is highly imaginative and strange, and full of surprises. It draws on similar energies to Bram Stoker's Dracula, Mervyn Peake's Ghormanghast, and other classics of the grand old Gothic tradition. The Roses of the Moon series carries the reader where the veil is thin, and the powers of darkness rise to the light.

Lovers of Anne Rice, Angela Carter, E.A.Poe, Bram Stoker, Grimms' Fairy Tales,Tanith Lee should enjoy this tale of Gothic Horror.

Roses of the Moon Book 1 Dark Reliquary Series eBook Alyne De Winter

The author weaves a spellbinding and utterly be-witching tale of a young girl caught up in a magical yet dangerous world. Alyne de Winter, author of several other gothic tales, The Lady in Yellow and Roses, Briars and Blood: A Gothic Re-telling of Sleeping Beauty: Revised Edition (Gothic Faery Tales) has taken us back in time to a world of a moonlit, rose-covered castle, Turks, lords, ladies, brave warriors, gods, gypsies, spells, superstitions and witchcraft.

As I read and became totally immersed in the story of our heroine, Mara, I also felt acute pain for her and her dismal surroundings. It is hard to imagine how such a young girl could survive the daily frightening experiences here. Mara is sensitive, and only nine years old with terrible, ongoing nightmares brought about by the horrible sounds and cries in the night that echo through the walls of Castle Szeppasszony. At age 16, Mara is moved into the Countess's wing of the castle, only to uncover the source of her nightmares and her mother's terrible secrets. She experiences extreme loneliness, pain and horror. It seems that the weird happenings inside the Castle Szeppasszony and the Trefoil Tower will never come to an end.

This book will take you on a journey of your imagination that you will not soon forget. You will also experience all that this young girl lived through in this dark, dank castle of secrets in the mountains of 17th Century Hungary. Mara also has her own secrets, and we will soon discover right along with her, the truth as she peels back the layers of her past in this wildly engaging tale.

Roses of the Moon Book 1 Dark Reliquary Series eBook Alyne De Winter Reviews

This is a remarkable book, the creation of a whole world, set in seventeenth century Hungary, and envisioned in brilliant detail, lovingly evoking all its flora and fauna and rich pagan lore. And it's the intensity of the author's vision and linguistic flair that makes this synthesis of the historical and the occult totally credible within the genre, especially as related via the viewpoint of the young Countess Mara, who always engages the reader with her wit and pathos. The story combines a folk-tale element - the fairy tale of Snow White- with the grim legend of bloodthirsty Countess Bathory. There are parallels with other writers in the fantasy genre like Angela Carter or Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast novels, for Mara's Castle Szeppasszony has an overwhelming presence and operates as an active force in the story. But Alyne de Winter has fused these elements together in a totally original way

Paul A. Green - author of The Qliphoth (Libros Libertad) and The Gestaltbunker (Shearsman Books)
This is intelligent, well-conceived fantasy. I appreciated the setting in Hungary against a backdrop of invading Turks, and the elaborate Castle Szeppasszony (a sprawling structure similar to Ghormanghast). It is interesting to follow the girl Mara as gradually she comes to comprehend what her mother, the Countess Orzsebett has been doing all these years, although this reader did wish at times that Mara would have come to this realization sooner. There are interesting, original depictions of magic; my favorite centered around the otherworldly (and mad) Zsarkany. Magic itself is an interesting component of the story, subdued and hinted at mostly throughout, and blending with the growing Mara's imagination so that it is hard to distinguish between what is her imagination and what is magic. Compelling characters exist in her father particularly, but also her love interest, Aleszandor. The novel is patient with itself, developing the story carefully...leading to a memorable finale.
This is a dark story, but not depressing. Mara's courage, humor, willingness to learn, and love of beauty shine with a bright heart throughout the story. I was so hopeful for her, I couldn't put it down. The descriptions are so good, I feel like I was there and couldn't leave.

If there are sequels, I am waiting.
I could not put this book down.I read it in 2 days, its been a long time since I have read anything like it.Smart writing, interesting story, great characters,I will read the sequel.
I'm sorry, but I couldn't finish reading this book. I have read several other books by Ms. De Winter so I know she writes books that I will like, but this was not one of them. I did get about halfway, I'm not sure what it was but I just couldn't read any more.
A real page-turner. This writer takes you there. You're in 17th century Hungary wondering what the heck those creepy sounds are coming up through the stones of the castle. Ms. De Winter does Gothic really really well. Memorable characters that you care deeply about. Loved it.
Oh My! What a book! I do not usually read "Gothic" and so never go to that section; there was a glitch and I saw this book and got it. It was well worth it! The story was fast enough paced for me, and I did not find it dragging anywhere. Some of the gruesome is no worse than what is happening today all over the world; and no worse than what history tells us. This was well written book, with just a few typos; but not even typos or dropped words, which may have been a problem from switching from book from to . I was not once tempted to leave the book , it was a sense of I have to see what she does next. It is one of those books, that will stay with you....and now to find the sequel! By the way Madam Authoress, WELL DONE!
